O. officers Elected for '63-^64 Term Oriental Rhapsody Is Prom Theme “Oriental Rhapsody” was the theme of the Junior-Senior Prom held in the ASHS gymnasium April 26. Pagodas, fountains, and garden scenes gave the gym a definite feel ing of the beautiful East. As couples walked into the lovely setting, they were greeted by a pic turesque pagoda over the gym en trance. The gym was elaborately decorated inside with a beautiful fountain at the far end and with murals of various garden scenes dis played on either side of the gym. A bamboo fence, a romantic bridge, and an enchanting pagoda completed the setting. Music for the Prom was presented by the Delmonicos, an instrumental and song group from Concord. Tony Almond, president of the Jun ior class, presented the Prom to the seniors. Recognition was given to the heads of committees for their leadership in planning the Prom. Committee chairmen were as fol lows: Diane Baker and Judv Herrin, co-chairmen, murals; Andy Cook, lake; Frances Trivette and Anita Wall, co-chairmen, invitations; Tony Almond and David Still, co-chairmen, pagoda; Sarah Cranford, bridge; Sherrie Kelley and Melissa Beam, co-chairmen, entrance; Frances Trivette, incidentals and gardens; Bill Harwood and Terry Morgan, co- chairmen, fence; Robert Scarboro and Benny Atkins, co-chairmen, re freshments; and Richard Summerlin, temple. Numerous members of the Junior class worked on these com mittees in preparation for the Prom, Miss Lillian Misenheimer, Junior class sponsor, directed the class in the activities. Refreshments consisted of lime sherbet punch and fortune cookies. Serving as chaperones were Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Wilson, Dr. and Mrs.; G. R. Wall, Dr. and Mrs. T. F. Kel-1 ley. Dr. and Mrs. F. M. Prior to the tapping, Beverly Freeman had the devotion, follow ed by Diane Baker who sang "You’ll Never Walk Alone.” Speeches concerning the four char acter traits of the National Honor Society, Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service, were given by Susan Rogers, Susan Kayler, Joanna Morris, and Delores Mor ton, respectively. Having been a member of the debate team for two years, Betty Herlocker’s other activities include serving as secretary of the stu dent Council, reporter for the school paper, and membership in the Science Club. Betty is a mem ber of Rainbow and attends Main Street Methodist Church. Ibba Wilson, having maintained an excellent academic record, is also a participant in a number of school activities which include Black Masque, FTA, Boosters Club, and serving as manager of the girls' basketball team. Ibba is ac tive in Tri-Hi-Y and attends First Baptist Church. As an exceptional student and an active participant in school, church, and civic activities, Frances devotes her time to the piano. She is a member of the Senior Choir and serves as assistant organist in her church. Tony, who is an active partici pant in his church, school, and civic activities, is the president of the Junior Class, vice-president of the Science Club, and president of his Sunday School Class and MYF. He is also a member of the football team and served as a member of the Junior Play cast last year. Besides being chief majorette and holding responsible positions in the school. Barbara Furr is also a member of Modem Music Mas ters, Black Masque, and the Boost ers Club. Barbara is a member of First Baptist Church where she serves as vice-president of her Sunday School Class. Active in church and school ac tivities, Sharron Holt has served on the Student Council and basket ball team for two years. She is a member of the assembly and Jun- ior-Senior Prom committees and the Boosters Club. Sharron serves as president of her Sunday School Class and assistant secretary of the Intermediate Department. Anita Wall has also excelled in her school work as well as in school activities, which include vice-president of the Junior Class, Student Council, Boosters Club, and Black Masque. Anita is presently serving as president of Tri-Hi-Y and attends Central Methodist Church. Mary Napier is an outstanding student and is also a member of the FTA, Science, and Math Clubs. She is active in Rainbow and serves as pianist for her Sunday School (Cont. on Page .3, Col. 5) from the president of the Belmont Chamber of Commerce and from a representative of the mayor of Bel mont. The keynote address was presented by Bob Alander, the ad vertising manager of the Char lotte Olyserver. In his address he stressed the need of self-sacrificing service which is demanded of a leader. Discussion groups on Student Council projects, leadership, train ing programs, orientation, evalua tions, assemblies, and inter-school relations were attended by the Al bemarle delegates. At the second general session, nominating speech es were presented for candidates for next year’s officers. Friday night, a banquet, follow ed by a movie and a bunco party, was presented by the Sacred Heart Academy. Many of the visitors were accommodated overnight on campus, while others stayed in homes in Charlotte, Belmont, and Gastonia. New officers were elected and in stalled the following morning. Of ficers for the 196,3-64 Congress in clude Dick Atkinson, Elkin High School, president; Bill Miller, Con- (Cont. on Page 7, Col. 5) Still Is Elected President Of Student Body David Still, Lynn Calder, Nancy Butler, and Tony Almond were elect- ' ed in the school-wide elections held April 16 to the offices of Student Or ganization President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer, respect ively. The election of new officers high lighted several weeks of campaign activities under the direction of the Student Council. Registration of vot ers was held March 19 and p>etitions were circulated March 20 through 27. The nominating convention was held April 3 under the direction of Ray mond Earnhardt, chairman of the Elections Committee. Two FBLA Club members, Joanne Herrin and Donna Allen, aided the Student Coun cil members in the voting procedure. Candidates selected were as follows: Doug Stokes and David Still, presi dent: Steve Pinkston and Lynn Cal der. vice-president: Inez Furr and Nancy Butler, secretary; and Bormie Benton and Tony Almond, treasurer. Campaign speeches were informative and very entertaining. Vigorous campaigns continued until the election. Campaign posters were displayed all over the school and everyone was seen wearing buttons for their favorite candidates. New officers will begin their terms of office after the installation service the first of next year. They will at tend the remaining Student Council meetings this year to become famil iar with S. O. activities. Two of them will attend the Student Council Workshop to be held at Appalachian State Teachers College next summer. Each of the new officers is well known for his activities at ASHS. David is slated to be one of the tri captains of the football team for next year. He ;is presently serving as treasurer of the Junior class. He is also Albemarle’s representative to the Governor’s Youth Fitness Con ference. A member of the Boosters’ Club, Black Masque Club, and Modern Music Masters. Lynn is a very active member of North Albemarle Baptist Church. Nancy is an active member of the Boosters’ Club, on the Full Moon staff, a member of the church choir at Grace Baptist Church, and the assistant editor of the church news paper. Tony is presently serving as presi dent of the Junior class and vice- president of the Science Club. An active member of the Tabernacle Methodist Church, Tony is president of his Sunday School class and MYF.
